I was touching in with BRs this morning and I thought to share the new thing I added the warning/context/to the reader type page I have at the beginning of my serial. Since a simple paragraph listing the types of sex by far isn't enough for my writing. And so I share a paragraph that talks about my writing, especially in the Vala's Story serial, and how extreme it is.
Writing in community. Well that bit of writing, warning, trigger, what-have-you... it got moved to "Skipping Down the Primrose Path: Book Three" and so I have to mention it again now or before in the publishing scheme of things. Delia Grace and the two books she's published through Blushing Books inspired this bit of writing. She has books with various warnings too; I especially appreciated the warnings of her darling Nettie (from her book "Affirming Antoinette") felt like a sister I'd always wanted. But so her warnings... lead me to thinking about how much I push and prod and provoke in the Vala's Story serial. I'm not sure I could ever give adequate warnings. In rewriting the books, I've explored things that enrich the plot line that I simply didn't have enough lived experience and thought time to be able to write. So yes, please, be ready when you sit to read my writing. You might find intense BDSM activity. You might find social justice discussion. You might find my characters discussing the intricacies of their many relationships, childhood abuse histories, domestic abuse that they've endured as adults, and a number of potentially triggering things. I will still try to put trigger warnings, content warnings, context explanations as I can in front of each book, but I might not catch everything; I'm a survivor of much myself and my perception of what is traumatic can be quite different from others. This is a short, but interesting paragraph, Joelle. It really gets one thinking about how specific a warning should be on a romance book.

I do so many things that aren't specifically genre-appropriate that I often wonder that. I mean, how many romance novels openly deal with characters processing the fall out from a domestic abuse situation? And I'm doing that in the context of a polyamorous relationship where there isn't a "parties to the abuse are no longer living under the same roof." But definitely with Vala's Story at least, a simple "this is the kind of sex I show" isn't enough. Thanks for the comment.
